Stuttering Highschool Dropout & Serial Entrepreneur I began my entrepreneurial journey at the age of 16 when I dropped out of high school due to avoiding every speaking situation possible in the attempt to hide my stutter. I planned for a life of ‘never speaking’ again and decided to professionally hide behind a computer for the rest of my life by studying a 3-year degree in IT and Multimedia. After I finished my 3 years at college, I quickly discovered that every employer needed someone who could speak to clients, handle help desk, manage the front of the office, and so on. In other words, my plans for ‘professionally’ not speaking again were foiled. I could not work in the IT sector after all, and I refused to let anyone know that I stuttered. Here I was, fresh out of college without the ability to speak, and I had to find a way to generate an income without using my voice – and that created a turning point in 2008. I began to read, study, learn, and practice everything I could around generating clients, who needed my skill-set – online **without using my voice. Thus, the dive into Internet marketing began.** I studied email marketing, PPC, conversion tactics, copywriting, social media, the psychology of marketing, and much more. **Some people enter an industry because they enjoy it; others enter an industry because it pays well. I feel like I had to go into online marketing because of my speech – I had no other choice.** I quickly found my footing in generating clients for myself, which led to the launch of my web design agency in early 2009. Then, towards the end of 2009, I was inspired to launch a fashion label *(I sold this brand a few years later) ,* which was successfully stocked in retail outlets. In 2013, I began generating attention for my newfound momentum and started to share what I learned about marketing, business growth, and entrepreneurship with the masses. I ran multiple sold-out marketing events across Australia, created and hosted over 6 online programs that went on to shape a new breed of marketing-strong entrepreneurs and business owners, and was even featured in countless interview and front-cover media outlets for my story and philosophy on marketing. This is a good thought exercise to conduct if you want to gain control of your business again."* **Business Owners ... Determination And Hard Work Are Not Enough!** Our goal as business owners should be: “Make yourself the least most important person in your business.” Sure, we may not start with that goal as a founder; however, it very quickly becomes a horizon that many business owners chase endlessly into an exhausted and overworked grave. The constant goal of working ON the business – rather than being stuck IN IT – always seems to be out of reach. It all starts with you; and unfortunately, you are the bottleneck. Emails get answered as fast as you can type them. New customers get signed up when you start or end the deal cycle. Corrections only get made when you spot the problems yourself. The quality of your business output depends solely on how much energy you have that day – and your business can only grow as large as your physical and mental capacity is. ? If you were to step away from your business for 90 days – away from your customers, your tools, and your team, everything – what would happen? Would you feel confident that your customers are receiving the great service you promised without you getting involved for the entire 90 days? This is a good thought exercise to conduct if you want to gain control of your business again. Hard work and determination are no longer enough. We work harder, and we work smarter – but the issue is, we are still “working” inside the business. The business needs us and the team needs us, with a never-ending list of tasks to keep us busy rather than to set us free. Part of the problem is that we have become so wrapped up in the business that we have forgotten that it is a separate entity from us. We should be treating it as a self-sustaining entity powered by an effective set of production-line systems rather than just our sheer determination and energy. How do we make ourselves the least most important person in our business? How do we replace ourselves and clone the best team members within our business and scale it so it runs and looks after itself? If our business is reliant on A-Players, it will crumble when they leave, or they reach capacity, or they demand higher pay, or they get headhunted. An A-Player is not scalable. Hiring one – or, even worse, multiple – is going to cause you to be chained by the golden handcuffs. A-Players allow the business to grow extremely quickly and usually haphazardly, with people doing their jobs how they see fit rather than following a production-line process designed for scale. A-Players are great, sure; however, they are not what we need – first, we need control and predictability. Therefore, A-Players are not the secret to scaling – SYSTEMS and PROCESSES are. However, most business owners think that a checklist, a document, or a screen recording is a system. If we meet these 3 line items, the business becomes predictable at every level. Here’s a simple question to discover if your business systems are up to scratch. When a team member goes through a process that you’ve built, do they have a question? If yes, then your process needs improvement. A process should solve the problem before the team encounters it. A process should result in correct work without any questions, not because we don’t want to answer the question but because everything has been addressed inside the process. With quality control triggers, delivery processes, and fail-safe protocols to check the fulfillment. If you do NOT have those systems built (or if you don’t know what they are), all you have is blind reliance and chance, and this is not a great foundation for business owners wanting to scale and remove themselves from the day-to-day operations. And we, the business owner, cannot be in all places at all times if we hope to actually build a business that thrives without us. Hiring one – or, even worse, multiple – is going to cause you to be chained by the golden handcuffs and lose Friday nights as you micromanage communications or sales. If you assign a project task to an A-Player, they can make it happen without any problems, great. Sure, you lose half of your profit margins, but the work is done… right? ? Where this breaks down is when you start scaling with more projects than a single A-Player can handle. So now you hire a second team member. This time someone a bit more “affordable” as your margins are starting to dry up due to the amazing wizard-like A-Player you’ve hired. You ask them to complete the same task but for a different client. Can you expect the same exact output? Maybe – but then again, probably not. Unless you have got quality control triggers, delivery processes, and fail-safe protocols to check the fulfillment. If you do NOT have those systems built (or if you don’t know what they are), all you have is blind reliance and chance, and this is not a great foundation for business owners wanting to scale and remove themselves from the day-to-day operations. Therefore, A-Players are not the secret to scaling – SYSTEMS and PROCESSES are. A-Players cannot be cloned. However, people’s actions, thought processes, and how they arrived at a certain decision can be cloned via SYSTEMS and PROCESSES. You need to create a system that can be duplicated, a system that can turn any team member (or even MULTIPLE team members) into people who operate like “A-Players” and can produce the perfect outcome every single time. Impossible? We have helped over 450 companies who beg to differ. For example, don’t just say, “Create a new ad campaign” or “follow up with this lead” or “edit this graphic” or “finish writing this content.” Do not bulk the task into one oversimplified SOP – this is how you fail as a founder. Your job as the founder should be to clear the path for the team. Make their lives easier so, in turn, they can make yours simple. Instead, create a series of actionable tasks with visuals showing what to do, text explaining what to click on, videos that show how to combine the two with comparisons that, when implemented in sequential order, will result in the correct output every time. Break the system down into singular processes that make up the entire engine. I’d rather see 27 easy-to-understand, actionable items that my grandma could complete rather than a chaotic, underslept business owner who keeps digging their future grave by quickly assigning broad tasks that are easy to MISINTERPRET. And then wonder why they “can’t find any good team members,” why “good workers are hard to find.” ? The systems tell people what to do. The systems are the multiplier. Poor systems with good people = poor results. Great systems with average people = great results. Here is a thought exercise. When you are building your next process or looping protocol or completing an onboarding procedure – pretend that you are going to be assigning it to 10 different team members. Will each team member come back with the EXACT same finished result? If not, then your process has room for assumption, misinterpretation, or random creativity. Don’t make assumptions about what people know or the preference for decisions they’ll make. If it is not said in a process, it won’t be actioned on. We’re not doing this because our team is “stupid”; we do this to make our team’s life easier and, in turn, our life simpler. The role of the CEO should be to clear the path for his or her team. People want to do good work. Most of the time, they are just not being shown how to execute it. Or they are forced to take a guess and pray it’s correct. Build systems so that ANYONE can create results at an A-Player Level. ❌Don’t rely on individual talent; rely on your systems. ❌Don’t scale your business on people; scale it on systems you own. Systems are predictable; people are not. You want your business systems to do the thinking and the problem solving for your team – to the point where you can hire anyone, even Grandma, to copy the same keystrokes and click on the same buttons to generate predictable results for your clients. And when you have systems like these built, you can use that free time to spend with family and friends, with work that’s done right the first time around, and with clients singing praises for your agency and referring everybody in their network to you. All of these make life harder, more complex, and less predictable, with nonstop Slack notifications, fires to put out, work to be re-done, client complaints ... the list goes on and on. Let us not do that. New clients only get signed when you start or end the deal cycle. The quality of work depends on how much energy you have that day. You are overwhelmed with work and it is not the work you wanted. Instead, you want to build your business on systems, not people you rent.
